FAQ

Questions about the converters

Short answers, including what the converters do not do. Billing questions are on the licence page.

Where it runs

Is CADBIMconverter an online converter?

No. The converters are desktop and command-line tools that you download and run on your own computer or server. There is no upload, and files never leave your machine.

Is there a web version where I upload a file?

No. We do not offer one, on purpose: models and drawings often fall under NDAs. Download the converter instead.

Does it need internet?

Not for conversion. You need internet only to download the converter.

Which operating systems are supported?

Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit) with GUI and command line, and Linux (Ubuntu 20.04+, Debian 11+, amd64) through .deb packages. There is no macOS build.

What do I need to install on Windows?

Unzip the download. The converters need the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2015-2022 (x64).

Do I need Revit, AutoCAD or MicroStation?

No. The converters read RVT, IFC, DWG and DGN files without Autodesk or Bentley software or licences.

Formats and versions

Which Revit versions can it read?

RVT and RFA files saved with Revit 2015 to 2026. Older files are not supported.

Which IFC schemas can it read?

IFC 2x3, 4x1, 4x4, 4x and 4.3. The release candidate IFC4X3_RC2 is not supported.

Which DWG and DGN versions can it read?

DWG drawings from 1983 to 2026, and MicroStation DGN v7 and v8.

What files does it write?

Excel XLSX from every converter, plus DAE (Collada) geometry from Revit and IFC, PDF drawings from DWG, and IFC from the Revit to IFC converter.

What we do not convert

Can it downgrade a Revit file, for example 2025 to 2024?

No. Revit itself cannot save to an older version, and we do not convert RVT files between versions. We read any supported version and export its data to Excel, IFC or DAE.

Can it convert RVT to DWG?

No. We do not write DWG files. For drawings, export DWG from Revit itself. Our Revit converter writes XLSX and DAE; Revit to IFC writes IFC.

Can it convert IFC to RVT, or DWG to IFC or RVT?

No. We do not write RVT files, and the DWG converter extracts data to Excel and drawings to PDF, not to BIM formats.

Can it convert DGN v8 to v7?

No. We extract data from DGN files; we do not convert between DGN versions.

Results and automation

What does one row in the Excel file mean?

One row per element, one column per parameter or property. In Revit exports, each element in the DAE carries the same element ID as its row in the XLSX.

How fast is it?

In our 2026-05-28 test on Windows 11, mean times per file were 4 s for DGN, 24.6 s for IFC, 27.6 s for DWG and 148 s for RVT, 10 files per format. Times depend on file size.

Can I automate conversions?

Yes. Every converter has a command-line interface for PowerShell, Python, batch files and n8n workflows.

Licence and price

Is it free?

The Community version is free for personal and research use, with all conversion features and no time limit. An ad page may open after a conversion.

Can I use it at work?

Commercial use in a company, processing files for clients, SaaS and redistribution need a commercial licence. The licence page has prices for ad-free licences and a quote form for teams and servers.

Is there an education licence?

Yes. Students and instructors get a free education licence on request.
